Luminous Waves

Luminous Waves was created by making 33 individual pieces of art with traditional media (paint and inks on various substrates) and then digitizing them and training a freeform AI model on them using Playform. This model renders amalgamations of the original works, and Playform contains tools for manipulating and exploring infinite possibilities. I use the resulting images to create looping videos, like this piece, and display them as projections to be experienced.

I am interested in the reflective nature of AI, recognizing its therapeutic properties, and implementing this into my process. Using AI allows me to identify patterns in my work, and explore themes more deeply. My Waveform pieces often feel like being underwater, looking up through the surface toward the light. They embody the properties of water and waves that humans are physiologically calmed by. It fascinates me that this effect occurs whether in person at a body of water or looking at a painting or digital rendition.  While I find healing in my own meditative art practice, this process that amplifies the effects and delivers them to the viewer is a strange magic. It entangles science, technology, nature, and human experience, relating it in a manner beyond language.
