Midjourney Imaginings I enjoy, and why.
Changing the world first comes through imagining new ways of being.
I started writing this post, with an intro to how I got into using AI, then language based models, and the development over the past 5-ish years in my work and play…but I’m skipping that and going straight to the stuff I want to talk about right now.
I find a lot of delight and joy in the Midjourney community and what people create. It’s been a fascinating journey to version 6.1. I’ve rated almost 60,000 images, and made almost 50,000 images. At this point, the AI is pretty good at making beautiful images. In fact, the Midjourney Explore page is so much like a sea of beautiful images, that my eyes glaze over. What makes any of them interesting? What stands out? What makes a photograph or painting “good”? How does that apply here? I’ve got the experience and degrees to be qualified to speak on this, so let’s see 😉
This first set of images, it’s all about light and feeling. I saved each of these while scrolling through the Explore page. This little collection makes a lot of sense to me, if you’ve ever seen my own photography, it’s mostly about capturing intangible things. The feeling of light and air, atmosphere, movement, memory, dreams…
So, many trends happen within the community. Sometimes it’s a word, a daily theme, or something that gets said in weekly Office Hours. Sometimes it’s a cultural thing. I’m not sure where this one came from in particular, but it’s ADORABLE.
Another thing that I tend to save are images with interesting juxtapositions between material and subject. I will enjoy images of bread, no doubt, but if you make that bread some sort of iridescent glass croissant, we’re having a whole new conversation.
Do you think about AI images at all? Can you tell that they’re AI generated? Are there any you enjoy making or looking at? Have you thought about how imagining things leads to creating new ways of being? Do you /imagine?
